Stack Vessel Pair - Small

Stack Vessel Series I

Stack Vessel is the first series created after the artist studied ceramic throwing in Korea for two years during the pandemic. The sculpture is reminiscent of a stack of perfectly balanced river stones, reimagined in the artist’s sense of ideal ratio and formal harmony.

The Stack Vessel series is created with traditional Korean ceramics and celadon glaze, in a neutral color palette to enhance its proximity to the natural world. The material choices also provide a timeless aesthetic that is easy on the eyes and not affected by ever-changing trends.

Stack Vessel series comes in two slightly different clay bodies - dark and light clay body. The vessels are individually hand-thrown on the wheel, then stacked on a metal and wooden base. The wooden base is designed to visually compliment each ceramic stack while providing structural support and weight to keep it upright and stable.

Stack Vessel series is an extremely technically challenging piece to create. Round forms with no flat base to support the form upright are rare to find in ceramics, especially in high-temperature stoneware because of the nature of gravitational pull and sagging in the kiln. When thrown, each vessel is made to compensate for the compression and gravitational flattening of the round form in the kiln beforehand. A successful stack is created through countless testing of how each unique shape morphs in the kiln. This sculpture series shows off the artist’s enjoyment of technical mastery and pushing the boundaries of craft.
